A Life Of Faith, Prayer & Surrender: George Müller

"If the Lord fails me at this time, it will be the first time."

(b. September 27, 1805 – d. March 10, 1898)

“In the greatest difficulties, in the heaviest trials, in the deepest poverty and necessities, He has never failed me; but because I was enabled by His grace to trust Him He has always appeared for my help. I delight in speaking well of His name.”
~George Muller~

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
~Romans 10:17~

"According to your faith be it unto you"
~Matthew 9:29~

"If ye shall ask any thing in My name, I will do it."
~John 14:14~

"There was a day when I died;
died to self, my opinions, preferences, tastes and will;
died to the world, its approval or censure;
died to the approval or blame even of my brethren or friends;
and since then I have studied only
to show myself approved unto God . . ."

"To learn strong faith is to endure great trials.
I have learned my faith by standing firm amid severe testings."
~George Mueller~

In a speech given shortly after his ninetieth birthday, addressed to ministers and workers, George Mueller had this to say about himself:

"I was converted in November, 1825, but I only came into the full surrender of the heart four years later, in July, 1829. The love of money was gone, the love of place was gone, the love of position was gone, the love of worldly pleasures and engagements was gone. God, God alone became my portion. I found my all in Him; I wanted nothing else. And by the grace of God this has remained, and has made me a happy man, an exceedingly happy man, and it led me to care only about the things of God. I ask affectionately, my beloved brethren, have you fully surrendered the heart to God, or is there this thing or that thing with which you are taken up irrespective of God? I read a little of the Scriptures before, but preferred other books; but since that time the revelation He has made of Himself has become unspeakably blessed to me, and I can say from my heart, God is an infinitely lovely Being. Oh, be not satisfied until in your own inmost soul you can say, God is an infinitely lovely Being!"

Mr. Mueller truly believed of God that . . .

"He is Altogether Lovely. This is my Beloved, and this is my Friend"
~Song of Solomon 5:16~

R.A Torrey said of George Mueller . . .

"One of the mightiest men of prayer of the last generation was George Mueller of Bristol, England, who in the last sixty years of his life obtained the English equivalent of $7,200,000.00 by prayer.

"Without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a Rewarder of them that diligently seek Him"
~Hebrews 11:6~

Through prayer, George Mueller, in his 63 years of ministry, had faith that God would provide means and money in his lifetime to:

  • Build 5 large orphan houses. (All orphanages had mammoth buildings).
  • Start 117 schools which educated over 120,000 young people and orphans. (The schools collectively had 121,683 students).
  • House and accommodate the needs of over 10,000 orphans, (a third of whom came to love the LORD. It is believed that 2,813 orphans left the institution as believers, and they in turn led thousands more to Christ. At the time Mr. Muller closed his diary, of the 2,000 students in the orphanage, 609 of them were believers).
  • Receive over 7.5 million dollars. (1800's).
  • Receive over 50,000 specific answers to prayer in his ministry, including the support of hundreds of missionaries, Christian publishing and distribution, and supporting educational and religious schools for all ages.
  • Send out 63 foreign missionaries to the mission field from the church where he preached .
  • Build 10 other churches.
  • Print and distribute over 281,000 Bibles. (Nearly 1.5 million New Testaments, and over 111 million tracts).
  • Travel, over 200,000 miles from the age of seventy to eighty-seven, in 42 countries, spreading the Gospel to 3 million people.
  • Read the Bible over 200 times.
  • Preach over 10,000 sermons.

George Muller believed reading the Bible was crucial . . .

"The less we read the Word of God, the less we desire to read it, and the less we pray, the less we desire to pray."

And . . .

“It is a common temptation of Satan to make us give up the reading of the Word and prayer when our enjoyment is gone; as if it were of no use to read the Scriptures when we do not enjoy them, and as if it were no use to pray when we have no spirit of prayer."

What was Mr. Mueller's secret?

“If honest of heart and uprightness before God were lacking or if I did not patiently wait on God for instruction, or if I preferred the counsel of my fellow-men to the declarations of the Word of God, I made great mistakes.”

George Muller prayed, continually, believing what God says in His Holy Word . . .

"And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask any thing according to His will, He heareth us"
~I John 5:14~

"But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus"
~Philippians 4:19~

"Let us therefore come boldly unto the Throne Of Grace, that we may obtain Mercy, and find Grace to help in time of need"
~Hebrews 4:16~

In his later years, George Muller said of his faith . . .

“I have never been permitted to doubt during the last sixty-nine years that my sins were forgiven, that I am a child of God, that I am beloved of God, and that I shall be finally saved; because I am enabled, by the grace of God to exercise faith upon the word of God, and I believe what God says in those passages which settle these matters.”
